Abstract:
This paper investigates whether distrust in banks affects bank behavior. We test the hypothesis
that distrustful customers of banks influence bank behavior through their monitoring role. We
perform an investigation using bank-level data covering 85 countries over the period 2012-
2022. We construct an indicator to measure distrust in banks using Google Trends for each
country-year. The main finding is that distrust in banks does not affect bank behavior. We find
no effect of distrust in banks on bank performance, market power, and risk-taking. These results
still hold even after performing several robustness checks. We thus conclude that people’s
distrust in banks does not monitor bank behavior.
